A Wonderful Program Of Family
Shows

Place des Arts is pleased to announce the
return of its PDA Junior youth series, which, for a third year
running, promises to be the family outing of choice. For the
2010–2011 season, the series will present more than 20
shows and events, mostly on Sundays. Varied, fun and affordable,
the PDA Junior program introduces children to live performance via
a broad range of forms, genres and styles. Through its various
partnerships, Place des Arts is able to offer a rewarding
experience that’s as educational as it is sure to
please.
A welcome return to start the season
The season kicks off with the return of the remarkable Un
cadeau pour Sophie, featuring singer-songwriter-poet Gilles
Vigneault, his daughter Jessica and a few of their singer/musician
friends. A treat for children and adults alike, the show will stage
two performances on Sunday, September 26, 2010 as part of the
Festival international de la literature.
Sons et brioches, the next
generation
Several new items will be featured on the menu of this
year’s Sons et brioches series. Due to their immense
popularity, these brunch-time concerts have added a second, early
afternoon show to certain dates. Not only that, but world music
will also spice up the season’s mix. Now, along with the
perpetually inspiring performances by Jeunesses Musicales Canada,
children can enjoy shows presented by Vision Diversité, an
organization whose artists represent Québec’s rich
array of cultural traditions. Get set for a celebration of musical
diversity this season, as harp and violin intersect with oud and
darbuka!
Dancing away the blues .jpg)
What better way to chase away the November blues than with
Variations mécaniques, the solo show by
choreographer Harold Rhéaume — a gentle, funny,
friendly piece that’s a whimsical nod to the films of Norman
McLaren and Charlie Chaplin? Next up is Les Coups de
théâtre, Festival international des arts jeune
public, an international festival of the arts for young
audiences that will fill the Cinquième Salle with dance and
theatre.
Holiday season
treats
Grand performances and sparkling gems will make up Place des
Arts’ Holiday season program. First up is that beloved
classic, The Nutcracker, from December 11 to 30,
2010 — a perennial favourite with audiences of all ages, who
never tire of following young Clara in her adventures through the
Land of Snow!
Last year’s overwhelming public response has prompted
the return of the enchanting Le petit Noël de
Québec Issime, performed by the singers and musicians
of Décembre. Geared for young (3-to-10 year old)
audiences, the show will play for three Sunday matinée
performances on December 5, 12 and 19, 2010.
Lastly, pure delight is on the program at the Cinquième
Salle between Christmas and New Year’s as young singers from
the Atelier Lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal,
performing with characteristic skill and versatility, present
Alea Canto – Les mélodies du
bonheur. Accompanied by an actor, the singers will serve up a
spirited mix of opera, music hall and pop music in a rousing,
entertaining production.
A season of discovery
At regular intervals throughout the season — in
November, February and April, to be precise — the Orchestre
symphonique de Montréal will present Jeux
d’enfants, its series of family concerts. Winter 2011
will also highlight Place des Arts’ partnerships with various
key events on the Montréal cultural landscape, including
puppet festival Les Trois jours de Casteliers and Les
Rendez-vous du cinéma Québécois, the
annual showcase of Québec film-making.
PDA Junior will also give the little ones and their parents a
chance to encounter a couple of engaging new characters. On at
least 15 occasions throughout the season, two colourful
personalities, Gaspart and Dahlia, will welcome audiences with
activities, games, quizzes and songs. Come and meet them —
and discover the secret behind their presence at Place des
Arts!
