Sixteen films about
dance, music, theatre and cinema to be presented in the
Cinquième Salle of Place des Arts
Montréal, February 25, 2010 – As
loyal partner of the International Festival of Films on Art (FIFA)
for a ninth consecutive year, Place des Arts is pleased to join
forces with this prestigious event and to offer an exciting program
of 16 cinematographic works exploring the multiple facets of dance,
music, theatre and cinema.
The 28th edition of FIFA takes place March 18 to 28. Seeking to
showcase artistic creation from home and abroad, during the
Festival Place des Arts will present a fine selection of films in
keeping with its role as a presenter of performing arts.
Step into dance
The selection of films on dance includes a number of strong pieces,
among them La Chambre blanche, a signature work
by Ginette Laurin, choreographer and founder of
the troupe O Vertigo, as well as Rêves de Babel, a
documentary devoted to Belgian choreographer and dancer Sidi Larbi
Cherkaoui, who has become a Place des Arts regular in recent years.
Other films include an voyage into the world of American dancer and
choreographer Carolyn Carlson and a portrait of young dancer Israel
Galván, a leader in the new wave of
flamenco.
Music... and all that jazz
In the realm of music, the selection of films focuses on legendary
individuals including Boris Vian. The documentary Boris Vian,
la vie jazz, made on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of
the French writer’s death, demonstrates through music that
the passage of time has not dulled the artist’s modern appeal
as a great jazzman, trumpeter, author, composer and interpreter.
Another towering French figure, and the muse of
Saint-Germain-des-Prés, is singer Juliette
Gréco, who appeared at Place des Arts last year. In
a rare event, she tells her story for the camera in Je suis
comme je suis, where she’s seen in conversation with her
husband, composer Gérard Jouannest, and her daughter,
Laurence Lemaire. In addition, the program of films on music will
provide viewers with an opportunity to get reacquainted with
several historic figures of music, including
Chopin and – at the other end of the
spectrum – Michael
Jackson.
Legendary figures
How better to represent the subject of theatre than to screen a
priceless film such as L’Aventure du Théâtre
du Soleil, in which the grande dame of French theatre,
Ariane Mnouchkine, revisits the theatre she
founded in 1964.
Finally, the theme of cinema is reflected in two
film portraits, both of them encounters with unforgettable
practitioners of the seventh art who are no longer with us:
Philippe Noiret, gentleman saltimbanque and Romy
Schneider, Un portrait en trois notes.
“Place des Arts is pleased to renew its
association with the International Festival of Films on Art,”
says Marie Lavigne, President and CEO of Place des Arts. “For
us – as this year’s programming makes clear – the
screening of cinematographic works is a unique opportunity to lift
the veil on the creation process of great artists, some of whom
have graced our stages. Our key role as a presenter of performing
arts, serving both artists and audiences, is further
strengthened.”
Booth and box office at Place des
Arts
From March 1 to 28, a booth will be set up in the Hall des Pas
perdus of Place des Arts to provide information about FIFA. It will
be open from noon to 8:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday and from noon to
6 p.m. on Sundays. Once again this year, the event’s box
