JUMEAUX
A concerto for body and soul by
Harold Rhéaume and Yvann Alexandre
Cinquième Salle of Place des Arts
November 10 to 13, 2010
Montréal, October 13, 2010 – In 2004,
Harold Rhéaume met French choreographer
Yvann Alexandre, who was on a scouting mission in
Québec. It was artistic love at first sight! Their similar
career paths and situations inspired them to pool their experience;
their collaborative relationship was born, and it in turn gave
birth to
Jumeaux. A two-person creation,
Jumeaux is a work about difference that goes
straight to the heart of the matter. The piece reveals its
creators’ exceptional artistic dexterity and showcases their
shared desire to create expressive, highly physical and emotionally
moving dance that’s well outside the mainstream of the form
and concept trends that currently predominate in contemporary
dance. Jumeaux, already booked for a tour of France in March 2011,
will be on stage at the Cinquième Salle of Place des
Arts from Wednesday to Saturday, November 10 to 13,
2010.
JUMEAUX: A CONCERTO IN THREE MOVEMENTS
A taste for challenge and the curiosity to see their meeting bear
fruit in the form a common work led Rhéaume and Alexandre to
create the Jumeaux project, a program composed of three distinct
works.
The first,
Homogène Duo (20
minutes) by Alexandre, was previously shown in the Off program of
the Avignon Festival in 2009. The piece is a dialogue between an
individual and his own reflection, a face-off that deals with the
dangers of one’s relationship to one’s self and the
fear that can result from that relationship. It’s followed by
L’Autre, a trio by Rhéaume
(20 minutes). This pas de deux for three brings the Other to the
fore. Who is he? The one dancing or the one watching? A fused
relationship, interlaced gestural language, is interrupted by a
third person.
Les Fractions (40 minutes)
is the master work of Jumeaux, by Rhéaume and Alexandre.
Designed for four dancers, two men and two women, Les Fractions
marries the experience, imagination and expertise of the two
choreographers and explores our relationships with the Other and
the instincts that motivate individuals, “fractions” of
the human species, to both unite and divide.
HAROLD RHÉAUME
For 20 years now, the art of Harold Rhéaume has touched
people, brought them together. A major choreographer living in
Québec City, he is the founder and Artistic Director of the
company
Le fils d’Adrien danse, a pillar of
the capital city’s choreography scene and one of the
province’s most visible companies today. His works are
accessible, refined and profoundly human. Among others, they
include
Morta, CLASH and Le Fil de
l’Histoire—the latter was an immense success
during the festivities surrounding Québec City’s 400th
anniversary, and was reprised the following year—as well as
NU and
Mechanical Variations. His work appeals to
a wide audience, in Europe as well as all over the province of
Québec.
YVANN ALEXANDRE
The highly precise gestural vocabulary of Yvann Alexandre is rich
in detail and reads like a sort of calligraphy of the intimate. His
work touches on the essence of dance itself, the energy that is
specific to movement. Much like his Québécois
counterpart, he is a leading-edge choreographer in his own region,
Loire. The 20-some works in his repertoire have been performed on
numerous stages and at various festivals, both in France and
abroad.
SURROUNDING THE SHOW
Thursday, November 11, just after the show, the
two choreographers will give a “Jumeaux” interview,
where they will be asked to respond to the same questions. It
promises to be an exciting discussion with a fresh
perspective!
Dancing from place to place
Before the performances of Jumeaux at the Cinquième Salle,
audiences can follow
Passages, a trip
through the streets of downtown Montréal choreographed by
Alexandre and danced by students from Montréal’s
LADMMI school of contemporary dance. Each night from November 10 to
13,
Passages leaves at 7 p.m. from 372 Sainte-Catherine
Street West, and arrives at the Cinquième Salle entrance.
For the little ones
Parents who loved Jumeaux will want to introduce their children to
the work of Rhéaume’s work by bringing them to see
Mechanical Variations, a show in which
two strange sculptures come to life when touched by an intrepid
dancer. The piece is tender and funny, a fantasy-style nod to the
films of Norman McLaren and Charlie Chaplin.
Sunday,
November 14, at 3 p.m. at the Cinquième Salle.
Rare is the opportunity to attend a true two-person choreographic
work! Don’t miss
Jumeaux, a show that’s by
turns joyful and touching.
November 10 to 13, at 8 p.m. at
the Cinquième Salle.
With its finger firmly on the pulse of the artistic avant-garde,
the Cinquième Salle is dedicated to presenting theatre,
dance and multimedia creations from here and abroad. Coming this
year:
Woyzeck (Sadari Movement Laboratory, Korea),
Hymn to the Universe (Coleman Lemieux & Sun Ra
Arkestra),
Insomnie (Théâtre Niveau Parking),
and
Gravity of Center (Rubberbandance Group).
