May 6, 2009 - Available in French - A partner in the continuing history of the Festival de Lanaudière

Montreal, May 6, 2009 –
Place des Arts is pleased to support the Festival de Lanaudière, the country’s largest classical music festival, which is presenting 26 concerts and a series of musical films for its 32nd edition, taking place this coming July 4 to August 2. The Joliette region will be abuzz with the sound of musical artists and ensembles from home and abroad performing at the Amphithéâtre de Lanaudière, as well as at churches in surrounding municipalities.

The 2009 edition will notably showcase two symphony orchestras from Québec: the Orchestre Métropolitain, conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, in an opening performance with pianist Alain Lefèvre and a programme that includes works by Gershwin and Stravinsky; and the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, conducted by Kent Nagano, performing Brahms’ German Requiem, with the Chœur Saint-Laurent, as a closing event.

The Festival de Lanaudière is also presenting several other acclaimed artists from Québec, such as contralto Marie-Nicole Lemieux, back home after a recent tour; soprano Karina Gauvin who brings us an evening of cabaret alongside singer Catherine Major; violinist Alexandre Da Costa who will play the music of Keisler; and Michel Donato, a bass player whose name is synonymous with great jazz.

Also featured at the Festival will be foreign artists of great renown in programmes devoted to symphonic and chamber music, opera, jazz, and world music. Year after year, spectators continue to appreciate the ongoing quality of the event’s programming.

For the fourth year in a row, Place des Arts is joining forces with the Festival de Lanaudière for the presentation of four evenings of outdoor musical cinema, featuring the following popular films: The Sound of Music, the classic musical starring Julie Andrews; Copying Beethoven, which takes us to the heart of the famous composer’s Ninth Symphony, with Diane Kruger and Ed Harris; Faubourg 36 with Gérard Jugnot, transporting us to Paris in the 1930s; and Mamma Mia!, the recent hit musical showcasing the music of ABBA and starring an astonishing Meryl Streep. These evenings are offered free of charge to fans of outdoor cinema, at the Amphithéâtre.
As manager and owner of the Amphithéâtre de Lanaudière since 1995, Place des Arts is pleased to offer the public a pleasant environment and a location renowned for its exceptional acoustic qualities.

Place des Arts is also responsible for the Amphithéâtre’s artistic programming during non-Festival periods. As such, last year it began presenting a new festival, Les Dyades, in collaboration with the Centre culturel de Joliette. This fantastical gathering, which combines circus arts and song, will take place once again this year from August 6 to 9.
