Montréal, August 24, 2009 – In 2009-2010,
Place des Arts plunges into the heart of creation by presenting its
first-ever full season in its most contemporary venue. Entitled Les
Sens de l’art, the season’s programming includes the
former Série Cinquième Salle as well as shows and
festivals presented in Cinquième Salle that share the same
artistic approach. Expect a season that bears witness to the
diversity and inventiveness of current creative work, using
artistic languages as varied as dance, theatre, film and
multimedia. From September to June, with the collaboration of
innovative festivals and inspiring artistic companies,
Cinquième Salle will introduce you to shows at the cutting
edge of today’s trends. Once again this year, rising stars,
newcomers and creators focused on research and experimentation are
on the itinerary.
In addition to welcoming artists from Québec and Canada,
Cinquième Salle invites audiences to discover what’s
happening at the other end of the world with creations by three
Australian companies, an initiative supported by the Australia
Council for the Arts.
DANCE
Cinquième Salle is giving a place
of honour to the art of choreography: nine shows will be on the
menu for dance aficionados. The young Australian collective
Force Majeure will present The Age I’m
In, a portrait of contemporary Australian society, based on
interviews with 80 (extra)ordinary citizens and played by dancers
and actors aged 15 to 80 years old. “You laugh, wince and
could even weep at times for the poignancy of the points it
makes.”
- Sydney Morning Herald
The Australian program also includes Construct, “a
small-scale marvel” according to London daily The Times.
Choregraphed by Tanja Liedtke, who died suddenly
at a young age, the work explores the construction and
disintegration of a house, a metaphor of all a the constructions of
a lifetime. Lastly, audiences will meet the company
Splintergroup with Roadkill, a voyage into the
heart of agoraphobia and the solitude of the red continent. In
terms of Québec companies, spectators are in for a treat!
This season’s calendar features the company
Système D / Dominique Porte with Ulysse,
Nous et les sirènes, an engaging piece for four dancers,
danced to original music played live. We’ll also see
Pigeons International with Boa Goa, the new
creation by Paula de Vasconcelos, a work of
dancetheatre navigating between the discovery of the sea passage to
India and the formation of the “first global village.”
Cinquième Salle will also welcome El12, the new show by
flamenco company La Otra Orilla, “a
mind-blowing discovery” according to La Presse. Founded by
dancer Myriam Allard and singer Hedi (El
Moro) Graja, the company is devoted to creating authentic,
vibrant and contemporary flamenco.
Starting at the very beginning of the season, dance lovers are
invited to attend free presentations by the Grands Ballets
Canadiens de Montréal dancers’ choreography
workshop as well as by the Rubberbandance
Group’s Post Hip Hop Project: the perfect chance to
spot tomorrow’s stars. And lastly, we’ll be celebrating
the 20th anniversary of Studio 303, a centre where
imagination, indiscipline and limit-breaking have reigned for two
decades. The spokesperson for the celebration? None other than the
one and only Marie Chouinard.
THEATRE
Under the spotlights of Cinquième Salle,
Théâtre de l’Opsis will present
Une Maison propre by young American playwright Sarah
Ruhl. Funny, sharp and out of the ordinary, the play is
directed by Martin Faucher and performed by
Émilie Bibeau, Hélène Mercier,
Patricia Nolin, Denis Roy and Monique
Spaziani. Extraordinary creator and puppetteer Ronnie
Burkett will also join us this season with his most recent play:
Billie Twinkle, Requiem for a Golden Boy. With his deeply touching
stories, his sublime puppets and his jaw-dropping technique,
Ronnie Burkett is at the peak of his art.
THE FESTIVALS
Cinquième Salle has the privilege of
hosting the Festival international de la
littérature, the International Festival of
Film on art, the Festival du Monde Arabe
de Montréal and the Festival
TransAmériques. In short, to keep your finger on
the pulse of the season’s major cultural events, you
absolutely must stop by Cinquième Salle at Place des Arts. A
versatile space that lends itself well to encounters with curious
audiences in search of something fresh, Cinquième Salle
continues to offer artistic expression with a view to innovation,
surprise and a departure from the norm.
