KENT NAGANO & THE SCHUBERT NINTH
KENT NAGANO, conductor
MIDORI, violin
MENDELSSOHN, Symphony No.4 « Italian »
HINDEMITH, Violin Concerto
SCHUBERT, Symphony No.9 « The Great »
A cultural reference for the romantics, Italy excited the enthusiasm of the young Mendelssohn, and it therefore comes as no surprise that he sought to present it in all its guises in his Symphony No. 4, “Italian.” A few years later, in 1839, it would be the same Mendelssohn who conducted a first complete version of Schubert’s Ninth Symphony. This came at the invitation of Schumann, who regarded this symphony as the greatest orchestral piece since the death of Beethoven.
On the same program, violinist Midori makes a much anticipated return to Montreal in the infrequently performed Hindemith Concerto, one of his most impassioned works, written in 1939, when the German composer was in exile in Switzerland.
